What To Wear To Family Court

Does it Matter What I Wear to Divorce and Family Court?

Going to court can be an unpleasant ordeal. An individual may be apprehensive about the court date itself, stressed over what will happen, and what they might have to say or do.

An insignificant detail can cause some individuals to be stressed. They may worry about what to wear to court and wonder whether their attire can affect the case. Different judges may have different preferences for clothing. However, it is typically preferable to overdress. Some judges do take a party’s appearance seriously.

First Impressions With the Judge

Almost no judge will hold it against an individual if they dress too nicely. But if a client comes to court in apparel like jeans, shorts, shirts, shoes, flip-flops, sneakers, cut-offs, and other casual clothing, a judge may be offended. They may then presume that the individual does not take the event with the gravity it deserves. They may also believe the litigant is being disrespectful to the court.

If a person is unsure what to wear, it is critical to discuss it with their lawyer. The atmosphere may be more casual in some family courts, but that is not generally the case. On average, most judges expect parties to at least wear clothes that could be categorized as business casual. However, dressing more formally does not hurt in most cases.

Dressing nicely does not require running up credit cards excessively for new apparel. An individual can often buy used clothing at a second-hand store, online, or at department stores at a reasonable price. Khakis and a polo shirt for a male may be a minimal outfit. For a lady, a dress, khakis, and a nice blouse or shirt could suffice. But it is essential not to overlook what you wear to family or divorce court. Some judges do take the litigant’s attire seriously.
